My friend Liv asked me to take some headshots as she was looking for work, I was happy for the opportunity to get some practice with portrait photography and to do it in a non pressured environment where I could relax and get the shots done at a pace that suited me. We went to Great Waldingfield as I had seen before some good backdrops which would make the background interesting enough without drawing focus from the centre of the image. The trickiest thing I found on the day was getting the light right on Liv's face, using the aperture priority mode I changed around the shutter speed and ISO trying to get a good balance of light exposure whilst trying to keep a low f-stop value so as to keep the background blurred. I also had to take into account the sun on the day, we shot around mid afternoon so I found it best to have the sun positioned just behind her to give a fill light effect. We also got some shots inside which I used a lighting set and black backdrop for, I personally prefer getting pictures this way as they are the most editable. I think they are better for headshots as well as they provide complete isolation on the subject as they focus solely on who is in the image without distraction from the background. Something I quite like doing with this setup is having one light positioned side on to the subject to light up half of the face, less useful for a headshot, but I love the effect it has on the subjects face as it looks almost movie poster like where the shadows consume half of the face giving it a more dramatic look.
